About NVQ
National Vocational Qualifications are designed by industry to prove the competence of the workforce. They are based on National Occupational Standards – specifications of what work is actually done, and to what standard.
The NVQ itself is not training – although some training is usually required as part of the process of reaching the required standard – it is ‘proof of competence’. A competent member of staff has proved that they can do a task in the appropriate manner to the required level of performance, and has demonstrated this proof over a period of time and under a variety of variables. For example, if a task is affected by weather conditions, the candidate would be expected to show that they understood the impact the weather would have, and could make appropriate adjustment to the way they worked.
NVQs group areas of work into ‘units’ and candidates usually have some choice in which units they take – choice will be based on the work they actually do from day to day.
NVQs are assessed by someone who is competent in the job, and has been trained to assess impartially and thoroughly. Assessors are the candidate’s supporters, guiding them through the qualification and making sure that all the evidence is gathered to show clearly that standards have been met.
